Japan - The Nissan Cedric was awarded “New Car of the Year”
and the Nissan Extroid CVT “Technology of the Year” for the
Year 1999-2000 after the test drive session and final
voting at the Automotive Researcher & Journalist’s
Conference of Japan (RJC) recently.
Nissan Cedric – New Car of the Year (1999-2000)
The newly released Cedric which is developed around the
concept of “a new-generation luxury personal sedan that
provides fresh excitement every time you see it and drive
it”. It has also won high accolades for its cutting edge
design, driving performance of the direct injection engine,
quietness, high level of environmental friendliness and
safety performance.
Extroid CVT – Technology of the Year (1999-2000)
“Extroid CVT” which is installed in the Nissan Cedric is
the world’s first CVT that is applicable even to rear-wheel-
drive cars fitted with a large engine has also gained fame
and respect as a breakthrough technology.
It adopts an original ratio change method, different from
the conventional CVT, whereby the engine’s power is
transmitted to an input disc, whose rotational motion is
transferred to an output disc by means of power rollers.
By integrating these cutting-edge technologies, the Extroid
CVT achieves unprecendentedly quick ratio change response
to deliver an exhilarating feeling of acceleration along
with notably quiet, smooth driving performance, in addition
to providing exceptionally low fuel consumption, increasing
10% comparing the conventional automatic transmissions.
Singaporeans will be able to experience the performance of
this high quality luxury car as Tan Chong is considering
marketing this award-winning car next year under the Nissan
Brougham VIP badge.

Tan Chong Release Two Bestsellers -- All new Nissan Sunny and Nissan Cefiro VQV6 |
|
| |
|
For Immediate Release
12 November 1999
Tan Chong Release Two Bestsellers --
All new Nissan Sunny and Nissan Cefiro VQV6
12 November 1999 – Singapore, Tan Chong today release two
of Singapore’s bestsellers; mid-range family saloon Nissan
Sunny and popular Japanese 2 litre sedan Nissan Cefiro.
Nissan Sunny
Singaporeans will be the first in the world to see this all
new and sleek design Nissan Sunny. According to Nissan,
this is the first “made for Asia” car. Noticeably longer in
the exterior (145 mm longer than its predecessor), its
interior room width and front headroom have also improved
by 25 mm and 15 mm respectively.
This model shares the same platform as the Sunny VIP which
won AAA rating for its safety. The new Sunny is available
in 1.5 EX Saloon and 1.6 Super Saloon (both with choice of
manual and automatic transmissions), and will be sold
alongside with the Sunny VIP.
Specifications include ABS, Brake Assist, Dual Airbag (1.6
litre; driver-side airbag for 1.5), full automatic air-
conditioning and Multi-link Beam Suspension. Leather seats
and sports rims will be standard items for 1.6 variants.
Price-wise, Tan Chong has fixed an introductory price
(without COE) of $80,500 for 1.5 litre (manual) and $88,000
for 1.6 (manual); automatic versions will be $3,000 more
than manual ones.
The total package price for Sunny 1.5 EX Saloon (manual)
works out to $94,500 (based on minimum bid of $19,000 under
Flexi-COE-bidding scheme) or $99,500 (based on guaranteed
COE of $24,000 under Guaranteed-COE scheme) for this month.
The Nissan Sunny has always been Singapore’s favourite car.
Last year Singaporeans grabbed 2184 units of the Nissan
Sunny, an amazing 400% increase over the previous year.
And it is still the nation’s most sought-after car. We have
to date, registered a total of 5477 sales units. In fact,
up to the 3rd quarter this year, we already have the lead
of 2313 units over second place Toyota Corolla. Sunny sales
to date also more than double that of last year’s best
selling model Mitsubishi Lancer for the whole of last year.
Nissan Cefiro
The third generation Nissan Cefiro is another distinguished
series developed in line with its “power and luxury”
legacy. Even before its official launch, the first two
shipments have already been snapped up.
The Cefiro enjoys worldwide reputation and its respectable
VQ V6 engine has been named one of the Ten Best Engines by
Ward’s Auto World, U.S. for five consecutive years since
its running in 1995.
This new model is 160 mm longer, 20 mm higher and 10 mm
wider than its predecessor. It comes in both 2 litre and 3
litre automatic transmissions.
With a renewed VQ V6 engine, it provides better torque at
practical speed ranges. New features for this model include
power driver seats and NATS (Nissan Anti-Theft System).
Sales of the Cefiro have been climbing steadily. In 1997,
Tan Chong sold 225 units, which doubled to 450 in 1998.
Sales units to date is an impressive 500 units, making it
the most popular Japanese 2-litre car.
Price without COE for 2 litre is $127,000. The total
package price for Cefiro 2 litre works out to $142,000
(based on minimum bid of $20,000 under Flexi-COE-bidding
scheme) or $147,000 (based on guaranteed COE of $25,000
under Guaranteed-COE scheme) for this month.
In conjunction with the launch of Nissan Sunny and Cefiro,
Tan Chong will hold its “Nissan No.1 Carnival” from 13th to
28th November 1999 at its premises.

PRESS LAUNCH OF
NISSAN SUNNY AND NISSAN CEFIRO
12 November 1999
The Oriental Singapore
Speech by
Mr. Joseph Ong
Managing Director
Tan Chong International Ltd
Good morning and welcome. Thank you for joining us today.
I’d like to start by saying that we are very pleased that
the first ten months of 1999 was another successful period
for us. Nissan’s total sales registrations reached almost
9000 units, which is a 50% increase over the same period
last year. To put it more graphically, 30 Nissans are sold
every day meaning 1 Nissan is put on the road every hour!
For the year to date, Nissan’s total market share stands at
22.8%. In the past five months, our average monthly sales
registrations hit more than 1000 units. We sustained our
strong sales momentum despite very competitive markets by
building our brands, leveraging on our extensive dealer
network and maintaining value to consumers.
Our Nissan Sunny did particularly well by becoming the best
seller on the island, we have to date, registered a total
of 5477 sales units. In fact, up to the 3rd quarter this
year, Nissan Sunny leads second place Toyota Corolla by
2311 units. This Nissan Sunny sales to date also more than
double that of last year’s best selling model Mitsubishi
Lancer for the whole of last year.
Now with the launch of this new generation Sunny, we are
very excited with our prospects of bettering the record.
The new Sunny, which replaces the current 1.5 EX Saloon and
1.6 Super Saloon, will be sold alongside the Sunny VIP. You
will learn more about this sleek and stylish saloon from
Mr. Otake in a moment.
As for Nissan Cefiro, we are delighted to announce that
even before its official launch, the first two shipments
have already been bought up which is not surprising since
the Cefiro enjoys favourable worldwide reputation
especially for its remarkable VQ V6 engine which has been
named one of the Ten Best Engines by Ward’s Auto World,
U.S. for five consecutive years since 1995. I shall leave
Mr. Sakai to enlighten you further with this award-winning
engine.
Whilst we are happy with increasing market share, Tan Chong
has concurrently increased investment in support facilities
to accelerate the company’s consumer-driven transformation
and growth. We opened a new 40 bays service outlet at Kaki
Bukit and renovated and upgraded the sales facilities at
Nissan Display Centre. These investments will further
strengthen the Company’s consumer-driven commitments from
today’s very strong customer base.
Recognising the scale and speed of change that e-business
will transform the automobile industry, Tan Chong has
upgraded its computer systems and totally revamped its
website with a focus on “user friendliness” to better meet
and exceed the consumer expectations in speed and accuracy
of response.
We have consciously designed our IT systems to accelerate
our decision-making, improve customer satisfaction and
ultimately deliver greater shareholder value. Visit
www.nissan.com.sg and experience it yourself!
With these two winning products from Nissan supported by
Tan Chong’s established infrastructure, we are dedicated to
providing not only excellent cars for Singaporeans but also
committed to delivering the highest level of customer
service as well.
In closing, let me thank all of you for coming and the
support and the confidence you’ve placed in us.
Thank you.

PRESS LAUNCH OF
NISSAN SUNNY AND NISSAN CEFIRO
12 November 1999
The Oriental Singapore
Speech by
Mr. Y Iwashita
Senior Vice President
Nissan Motor Co Ltd
Good Morning, ladies and gentlemen. Thank you very much for
coming to the new Nissan Cefiro and the new Nissan Sunny
launching ceremony. My name is Yoshi Iwashita. I am Senior
Vice President of Nissan Motor Company.
We are delighted to be introducing new Nissan Cefiro and
new Nissan Sunny models, and we are confident that they
will be very successful., Mr. Sakai and Mr. Otake will
explain the details of these models to you later. You can
see the actual models behind you, so please take the time
to have a closer look at them.
Well, I would like to take this opportunity today to
explain Nissan's current situation globally and in
Singapore.
As you know, Nissan entered into an alliance with Renault
in March. Since then and under new management, we took a
long and detailed look at our situation from all angles,
and subsequently announced the Nissan Revival Plan on
October 18. In this plan, Nissan stated what we are going
to do, and we have established a clear direction. Please
refer to the material which we handed out to you today.
In preparing the Revival Plan, we established nine cross-
functional teams. The team members were selected from the
management ranks and each team composition had to be cross-
functional and international. Each team focused on a
particular business function.
The functions were, "Business
Development", "Purchasing", "Manufacturing", "Research and
Development". "Organization & Decision Making
Process", "Sales and Marketing", "Administration
Costs", "Financial Management" and "Product Phasing Out".
The strategy for each market is not shown in our plan, but
today we will discuss the sales and marketing strategy for
Asian countries and our direction for Singapore too.
In many Asian countries, due to the economic crisis that
began in 1997, total market demand has continued to
decrease. However, the brakes have been put on this trend
and we can see signs of recovery now.
Meanwhile, the automobile industry is changing dramatically
and rapidly throughout the world. We believe that Asia is
one of the most important and core markets and intend to
tackle our task here aggressively.
Thanks to the COE quota system, Singapore car market was
fortunately not affected so much by the Asian economic
crisis. And for Nissan, this year sales were very good.
Particularly the Sunny and Cefiro passenger models, and the
Cabstar commercial models showed very good results. We now
occupy the No.1 position in sales up to October this year.
Our market share is expanding compared to last year and is
now over 20%.
There are not so many markets where Nissan is achieving
more than a 20% market share. Singapore is therefore a very
important market.
Every car maker in the world can be found here in
Singapore. We can count more than one hundred. Singapore is
just like a car showroom. This means that competition is
very hard. We also consider Singapore to be the car
showroom of Asia.
We are also doing all we can to produce good products. It
is natural that a manufacturer produce good products. In
order to do this, investment in research and development
will grow from 3.5% to 5% of turnover, and will be
concentrated on new products and new engines. We will
increase the headcount in R & D by 500 people within 3
years.
As for the timing of new model launches, it sometimes
happens that launches in overseas markets are delayed one
year or more than the Japan launches. Our target is bring
this down to no more than three months in the next 3 years.
A cross-functional team will determine which model is to be
sold in which market. We are confident that the best and
most appropriate models can be marketed in each market.
We still have much to do. However, rest assured that we
will continue to market our best products in Singapore,
because Singapore is the world's car showroom!
The new models to be marketed should meet Singapore
customers' expectations. We promise to spare no effort in
making sure that this is so.
So here today, you have two new models, the all new Nissan
Cefiro and the all new Nissan Sunny. Singapore is the first
Asian market to have introduced the new Sunny.
Mr. Sakai and Mr. Otake will now go into the details of
these new models. After their presentation, I am sure you
will be as enthusiastic about them as we are.
Thank you for your kind attention.

Tan Chong to Introduce Another Sunny Member |
|
| |
|
[11 June, 1999] Tan Chong announced the introduction of an
additional member to the Sunny family, Sunny VIP 1.5.
The new Sunny VIP is 20mm longer and 30mm higher compared
to the current Sunny. Wheelbase is kept at 2535 mm while
tread is 20 mm wider at the front and 35 mm wider at the
rear. The car features an environmentally friendly LEV (low
emission vehicle) and is dubbed to be ecological with the
new NEO (Nissan Ecological Oriented) engine QG15DE series.
The Sunny VIP boasts the best specifications in the 1.5
litre category . It features 2 airbags, ABS and the new
technology EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution). Tan Chong
has also thrown in leather seats as standard for this
version.
Price-wise, Tan Chong has fixed an introductory price
(without COE) of $78,500 for manual and $81,500 for
automatic; which is just $7,000 more than the current Sunny
1.5 litre models but is $500 cheaper than the current 1.6
litre models. The total package price for the manual
version works out to $95,500 (based on minimum bid of
$22,000 under Flexi-COE-bidding scheme) or $100,500 (based
on guaranteed COE of $27,000 under Guaranteed-COE scheme)
for this month.
The Nissan Sunny has always been Singapore’s favourite car.
Last year Singaporeans grabbed 2184 units of the Nissan
Sunny, an amazing 400% increase over the previous year.
And it is still the nation’s most sought-after car. The
company has doubled its Sunny sales to 1409 units for the
first five months this year compared to 614 units for the
same period last year.
Tan Chong is confident of expanding its market share with
the introduction of this Sunny VIP in its Sunny lineup. In
fact, even before its arrival, the company has already sold
its shipments of more than 500 units.
In conjunction with the launch of the Sunny VIP, Tan Chong
will hold its “I Love Sunny” Carnival from 13th to 27th
June 1999 at its premises.

Nissan Cefiro VQV6 Engine Wins Again |

Named One of the Ten Best Engines for 5 Consecutive
Years
The Nissan VQV6 3.0 engine used in the Nissan Cefiro has
been named for the fifth-straight year to the
prestigious “Ten Best Engines” list compiled by editors at
Ward’s Communications, Inc., a leading automotive trade
publisher in the United States.
The Nissan “VQ” engine is one of just two engines that have
been voted to the list every year that editors of Ward’s
Auto World magazine and Ward’s Engine and Vehicle
Technology Update newsletter have named the best engines in
vehicles sold in North America.
The VQV6 engine features microfinishing of camshafts and
crankshafts, a digital knock control system and a cross-
flow coolant pattern. The engine produces more power and
torque while being more fuel efficient, quieter and smaller
than its predecessor.
“Five years after its launch, it remains in the opinion of
Ward’s Best Engine testers, the best V-6 available in the
U.S. at any price,” said Bill Visnic, technical editor of
Ward’s Auto World.
“Being named to this list is a great honour, and being
named every year since the list has been made is even a
greater honour,” said Shigeo Ishida, president of Nissan
Research and Development, Inc., who accepted this year’s
award on behalf of Nissan. “This VQ engine, which is also
used in Nissan products in Europe and Japan, truly is a
world-class engine in world-class cars.
Over in Singapore, sales of the Cefiro have also been
outstanding. In 1997, Tan Chong Motors sold 225 units,
which doubled to 450 in 1998. And, for the first quarter of
this year, Tan Chong Motors put close to 200 Cefiros on the
road, making it the most popular Japanese 2-litre car.
